A question of POSIWID

Make Poverty History – not exactly a movement threatening to do precisely what it says on the label – has become part of our Zeitgeist. So has the abortive attempt by various member countries to get the new EU constitution ratified. Both are really a question of questions. And the answer, as always, lies in the question.

The Europhobic, rejectionist Daily Telegraph, having covered the constitution's demise in similarly gleeful tones, reported last week that "a huge majority of Britons believes that pumping billions of pounds into Africa would be a waste of money".

What it didn’t report was that the question it asked was: "How confident are you that, if outsiders donate more money to Africa, that money will be spent wisely, rather than being wasted or finding its way into the pockets of criminals and corrupt governments?"

Mmmm…that's a good question, I’ll have to think long and hard about that…
